Welcome! Thank you for reaching out and taking the first step in being vulnerable, and asking for help. You are definitely not alone. This is a safe space, so please feel free to share anything you’d like. I want to join you on this counseling journey to help you feel safe, heard, respected, and comfortable in sharing your story so that together we can help you succeed and feel better. I have a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Ball State University, and a professional counseling license in the state of Texas. I am originally from Ohio, but currently live in Clearwater, Florida with my husband and baby. Before we moved to Florida, we lived in Texas where I worked in several different locations, including a psychiatric hospital where I helped determine if people needed to be admitted or referred to outpatient counseling. Using my crisis counseling skills, I helped patients feel safe, respected, and accepted in sharing their stories of depression, anxiety, trauma, or addiction. I then worked at a private counseling practice working directly with adults and families in their homes as a mental health counselor. After they closed their doors, I worked at a non-profit mental health center using play therapy with children. After that I worked as a community-based counselor and case manager at a non-profit, certified community behavioral health center. I met with people in their homes or in the community listening to their stories, helping them work through their emotions to better make decisions for their lives. I then transitioned to a new unit at the same agency as a school-based counselor working with children at a local elementary school. I have the most experience working with people experiencing depression, anxiety, trauma, low self-esteem, and low-motivation. I draw from a variety of counseling theories including person-centered counseling, cognitive-behavioral therapy, and choice theory. It is my goal to create a safe, welcoming and caring space for you to feel free to be vulnerable in sharing your story so that we can work together in helping you succeed. It can be tough finding a counselor you feel comfortable with, so if at any time you think we’re not working well together, please do not hesitate to say so! I look forward to meeting you and joining you on your counseling journey!

Hi! I am a licensed counselor based in Austin, Texas. My style is friendly, focused, and down-to-earth. I aim to be helpful with each individual I work with, and take pride in designing a therapy that will really work for you. I’ve trained in a variety of approaches and find that virtually all approaches offer something valuable. However, I believe the classic fundamentals of therapy - empathy and a good collaborative therapeutic relationship - are the primary basis for effective therapy and therefore I put a lot of effort into these. One of my views about life is that it is often asking for various forms of balance: Balancing kindness and strength, tenderness and toughness, openness and clarity, relaxation and alertness. And so in therapy, I always strive to create the right balance for you of supportiveness and challenge. And, I invite and encourage your candid feedback about the process (and by candid I mean candid - really!) so I can make appropriate adjustments. Therapy, like life, can be a wonderful adventure and I’m glad for the opportunity to support you in the journey. *** Education: St. Edwards University, Masters in Counseling, 2012.

My counseling philosophy is that life is short; so, the faster change can be achieved, the more time can be spend being free of negative emotions and believes, past traumas and hurts, and any guilt or shame that may be weighing you down. That does not mean that we will not slow down should we reach any of those hurts that needs to be approached gently and with patience. A bit about my history: I was born and raised in South Africa, where I obtained an Honors Degree in Psychology in 1986. The United States gave me the opportunity to further my studies in the field I am so passionate about, and I completed my Master’s degree in Counseling at Dallas Baptist University in 2012. Since then, I've been practicing as a Licensed Professional Counselor. Due to licensing requirements, I may unfortunately only provide counseling to people residing in Texas.

My what (short bio): I graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2013 with a Master of Science in Education and am currently working towards my Ph.D. in Organizational Leadership. As a Therapist, Company Culture Cultivator, and Leadership Development Facilitator, I work to support others in living the lives they desire. This intersection of professional development & job training and an individual’s happiness & life satisfaction is the focus of my current studies. It is my hope that not only will our personal but also our professional lives, will create an environment that allows us to not simply survive but thrive. My Why: I always thought I would climb the corporate ladder. Yet as my life progressed, I constantly found myself providing support for what was stressing and distressing those around me. I enrolled at UPenn to learn more about people and the human condition. I found that we are more alike than we think, capable of more than we try, and more courageous than we know. It is my goal to help all of my clients identify the lives they desire to lead and support them in living that life. My How: My sessions are CBT-based with a few other ideologies sprinkled in. It is my belief if we can gain awareness of our thoughts, we can better identify our feelings then we are able to choose our actions. I give my clients homework and use our sessions to reflect on present situations impacting their lives. We occasionally discuss the past and how it is impacting the present, after all, we are the sum of our experiences. To ignore the past is to ignore the foundation our life was built on. The two quotes below do a great job of capturing my thoughts on therapy and its impact on our lives. “Not everything that is faced can be changed. But nothing can be changed until it is faced,” - James Baldwin “The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking”. – Albert Einstein Learn more about me at www.JtheTherapist.com

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

Some of the most commonly asked questions about therapy can be found in the section below.

How much does therapy with a licensed therapist cost?

Mental health professionals can differ in price. Forbes found that the average cost of in-person Texas therapy in the US is around $100 to $200 per hour. Pricing can also vary based on your location.

BetterHelp offers payment plans of $65 to $100 per week. You can also take advantage of this pricing on one of BetterHelp's sister platforms, like ReGain for couples or TeenCounseling for teens aged 13 to 19.

Is it possible to find a therapist, counselor, or psychology practitioner that offers affordable therapy?

Many therapists may be upfront about their pricing and whether or not they take health insurance from the beginning. Additionally, some in your area may offer a sliding scale plan to allow those with lower incomes to pay less for therapy. However, services online can often save individuals a few hundred dollars per month.

When should I get a therapist in Texas?

Mental health services and mental health providers may help you navigate various concerns. You do not need a diagnosis or condition to attend therapy; You can discuss grief, relationship concerns, stress, or life changes and ask for general advice. A counselor may help you gain power over your life and emotions while you navigate day-to-day experiences.

What can a psychologist help me with in therapy?

Mental health issues don't always present as a crisis. Many professionals provide talk therapy and support for life transitions, skills learning, relationship problems, or life coaching. Online therapy sessions can allow clients seeking therapy to experience professional help through video, phone, or live chat sessions without commuting to an office.

Does insurance cover the cost of in-person or online therapy with a therapist in Texas?

Different counseling services can vary in cost. Therapists must apply to accept insurance through insurance companies, which may take time and money, so not every therapist offers services through insurance. If you cannot find a therapist that accepts your plan, BetterHelp may be cheaper than visiting an in-person therapist.

Are online therapy sessions the safe option?

Online therapy through BetterHelp and its sister platforms is safe. Therapists are licensed, experienced, and vetted before being contracted with the platform. If you experience any concerns with your therapist, you change your counselor through the platform or app at any time.

In today's fast-paced society, mental well-being has become a cornerstone of a fulfilling life. Amid the daily challenges and stressors that can overwhelm even the most resilient individuals, seeking professional guidance often offers a path to clarity and balance. The journey toward improved emotional health involves understanding personal triggers, embracing self-compassion, and developing effective coping strategies. While self-help books and online resources provide valuable information, nothing compares to the personalized support offered by a qualified mental health professional. One-on-one sessions with experienced experts can help uncover the underlying issues contributing to anxiety, depression, or other emotional hurdles. With a careful and empathetic approach, these professionals tailor their advice to suit individual needs, ensuring that each person receives strategies that work best for their unique circumstances. Whether through cognitive behavioral techniques, mindfulness practices, or other innovative methods, the aim is to foster resilience and empower individuals to take control of their inner lives. For those living in bustling urban centers, engaging in face-to-face sessions in a welcoming environment can be particularly beneficial. Access to a caring clinician provides not only a safe space to explore difficult emotions but also builds a support network essential for long-term recovery. The process encourages self-reflection and greater insight into behavioral patterns that might otherwise go unnoticed. While the journey can be challenging at times, the rewards include enhanced emotional stability, improved interpersonal relationships, and a renewed sense of self-worth. In one notable case, the guidance provided by a highly trained therapist proved instrumental in navigating a tumultuous period. Through structured sessions and tailored interventions, the individual learned to identify stressors and develop healthier responses to adversity. This experience underscored the transformative impact that dedicated support can have on one's overall quality of life. In a region like Texas, community-based initiatives and accessible mental health programs further reinforce the value of professional help. These efforts emphasize early intervention, preventive care, and continuous support, ensuring that more people are equipped to face life's inevitable challenges. Ultimately, investing in mental well-being is an act of self-care that yields lifelong benefits. By embracing professional support, individuals can unlock new levels of emotional resilience and discover pathways to a brighter, more balanced future. Each step taken toward healing represents a commitment to personal growth, enabling a life filled with renewed optimism and strength. Embracing this transformative journey consistently paves the way for deeper understanding, lasting peace, and meaningful personal progress.
